From a farmhouse on the hill to the gracious host of the KZN South Coast.

Long before the gardens were planted, this was a working farmhouse on a rise above Umtentweni — solid walls, wide verandas, and a view that ran all the way to the sea. More than a hundred years on, those original walls still stand at the heart of the lodge, recognised today as part of the South Coast's built heritage.
It was former Proteas cricketer Rudi Steyn who saw what the old house could become — converting the farmhouse, room by room, into a place for people to stay, and laying the foundations of the lodge you'll visit today.
In the years that followed, the lodge became known well beyond the South Coast — a much-loved chapter under the Mseleku family, of Uthando Nes'thembu fame, who brought their own warmth and following to its rooms and gardens.
Today, Umdlalo Boutique Lodge & Venue is owner-operated by the Naidoo family, who have lovingly renovated the property to a four-star standard while keeping its heart intact. At the front of it all are Vijay and Suria Naidoo of Port Shepstone — the faces you'll meet at check-in, and the reason a stay here feels less like a hotel and more like being hosted.
Eight individually designed rooms. A honeymoon suite with a freestanding bath. Gardens that run to the horizon, two firepits for the evenings, and the sea five minutes away. Refined, but never stiff. Looked after, never fussed over.
"We didn't want to build a hotel. We wanted to keep a home — and share it."

A stay at Umdlalo opens onto the whole property — dining, wellness and rest, all on one coast.
Four-star quality in every detail. Proudly of the KZN South Coast — specifics over superlatives. The unhurried warmth of a family-run home. And gardens, coastal light and sea air as part of the experience.
Host your wedding, plan your retreat, or simply stay a while — we'd love to welcome you.
